The audience at Kristi’s graduation clapped politely as she waved and went back to her seat. Few of them knew how much work it had taken her to get her, how many hours she’d had to study and how far she’d come. Her mother had never stayed in one place very long – she was more of a free-spirit whose casual disdain of legal matters had kept her on the run for most of Kristi’s life. Of course, Kristi didn’t know about this and neither did her step-father when he’d married her mom.

One morning they woke up and her mother was gone. After that it had fallen to George to make sure Kristi got the education she needed. She was way behind in her studies and just starting high-school when her new Daddy said to her, “I know it’s tough now. There’s so much to do and so much to learn, so I’m going to make you a promise. If you graduate as the Valedictorian, anything you ask will be yours. If you want a trip around the world, you just name it. If you want a new car, just point. Anything your heart desires will be yours and all you have to do is tell me. If it’s in my power to give it to you, I promise I will.”

There was one thing she knew about her Daddy and that was that he never, ever broke a promise. Over the last four years she’d watched him do things that weren’t in his best interest just because he’d given his word. This ethic had served him well and everyone knew him as a man they could trust. Because of that, he’d become a very wealthy man.

Kristi hoped he would stick to it today.

For four long years she’d kept her nose to the grindstone. At first, it was because she wanted a new car, then she wanted to spend a summer traveling Europe, but the more time she spent with her step-father, the more she realized that what she wanted was in front of her the whole time.

Endless hours he worked with her on her school projects, tutoring her where she was deficient and cheering her up when she was down. Of course, she didn’t mind because she loved spending time with him. He was strong and good, honorable and handsome and the sexiest man she’d ever known. After years of bouncing around from place to place and watching her mother hook up with losers, to see that there was another way to live changed her whole view of the world.

Over the last four years, he’d had an endless string of gold-diggers try and latch on to him, but he was too smart for them.
